Your Hands: A 13th-Century Hymn Refreshed — and Refreshing

Your Hands

For dogs have surrounded me;
A band of evildoers has encompassed me;
They pierced my hands and my feet.
— Psalm 22:16 (NASB)O Christ the Shepherd, great and good,
Upon the tree suspended,
Your body pinned against the wood
And by Your hands extended.
O holy hands that all should hail!
New roses there are growing;
They bloom with red around each nail
Where many drops are flowing.Your cross arrests my inward sight,
Its plea, intense and fervent;
My understanding, will, and might–
Let each become Your servant!
Then draw me in Your love so wide
Before the cross I cherish,
For where Your hands were crucified,
There all my sin must perish.

Your holy hands I now embrace
With joy and lamentation;
I kiss the wounds that flow with grace
And weep at my salvation.
Now by Your sprinkled blood, I plead
For You alone to tend me,
And in my final hour of need,
Then may Your hands defend me!

A HYMN FOR TODAY – A Foretaste of Your Rest

A HYMN FOR TODAY

A Foretaste of Your Rest

Gracious Father, Friend divine,
Consolation of the blessed,
You have touched this day of mine
With a foretaste of Your rest.
Though tomorrow care may come,
Trial arise and grief ensue,
Now I thank You for the time
I have spent in joy with You.

Should this hour of rest depart
And the joy it brings me cease,
I will bear it in my heart
As a promise of Your peace.
When I strain beneath new woe
Or contend with future sin,
From this moment I may know
You will bless my life again.

Father, though I cannot see
How my path will end below,
Still I know You wait for me
Where my heart has longed to go.
When my body cannot stand,
Take my spirit to Your breast;
With a father’s gentle hands,
Bear my soul to Sabbath rest.

A FORETASTE OF YOUR REST thanks God for the times of peace that sometimes appear in our lives. Those moments promise both that God will also be with us in tumultuous times, and that He will give us final rest in Heaven. (Isaiah 26:3; Hebrews 4:7-10)

A HYMN FOR TODAY – Purify Us

A HYMN FOR TODAY

Purify Us

LORD, Restorer, Hand unseen,
Come and make Your priesthood clean;
Come refine our every part;
Purify us, thought and heart.

In our weakness and desire,
Melt us with Your cleansing fire;
Burn temptation from our minds;
Leave Your love and peace behind.

To complete us, Father, bless:
Make us gifts of righteousness,
Honored in the work we do,
Golden vessels fit for You.

PURIFY US calls upon God to cleanse His people. Only after He burns away the impurities that mar their makeup can they be suitable for honorable roles in His service. (Malachi 3:2-4; 2 Timothy 2:20-21)

A HYMN FOR TODAY – Song of Angels

A HYMN FOR TODAY – Song of Angels

In the morning of creation,

When no human voice was heard,

Angels sang the adoration

Of the Father and the Word.

Shouting in that ancient quiet,

With the morning stars, they sang;

Suns and planets heard them cry it,

And the silent heavens rang,

And the silent heavens rang.

Mantled in eternal glory

On a still Judean night

Angels sang another story

Of forgiveness and delight.

They, the messengers of heaven

Came with gladness to the earth,

Welcoming what God had given,

Praising our Messiah’s birth,

Praising our Messiah’s birth.

Now the angels’ exultation

Echoes out again, again,

For they sing at each salvation

Of the sinner from his sin.

With the saints they join together,

Crying with united voice,

“Blessed be the Lord forever!

All who hear his name, rejoice!

All who hear his name, rejoice!”

A HYMN FOR TODAY – The Feast of Love

A HYMN FOR TODAY – The Feast of Love

Savior, as we eat Your supper,
We are joined with those apart,
Joined in memory and worship,
Near in worthiness of heart.

Holy ones throughout the ages
Also join us as we sup –
Saints united, past and future,
Sharers in the bread and cup.

All Your church is one in worship,
One in heart with You above,
Tasting one eternal sharing
As we keep the feast of love.

THE FEAST OF LOVE explores the implications of the Lord’s Supper and the universal church. Because all Christians are one when they partake of the one bread, we share the Lord’s Supper with Christians everywhere and from every time. (1 Corinthians 10:15-17; Jude 12)
